What Is Micellar Water?

Written by: Jasmine Biju

Face wash is essential in a daily facial routine to ensure the maintenance of healthy skin. It helps to remove impurities such as dirt, bacteria, and dead skin cells. Micellar water is another method to uphold healthy skin to remove these same impurities in addition to makeup. It is a good alternative to face wash; however, it can be incorporated as a first cleanse or be used as a double cleanse.

Micellar water is a gentle solution that helps to get rid of impurities on the skin. It is made up of micelles which are a group of cleansing oil molecules suspended in water. The molecules are attracted to dirt and oil molecules, allowing them to eliminate these unwanted substances without inducing a drying effect on the skin. Micellar water is a solution of purified, demineralized water and gentle cleansing molecules. Thus, it can be used as a moisturizer, makeup remover, and face wash.

The convenience and effectiveness of micellar water have allowed it to gain prevalence in the skin care industry and gain endorsement by several beauty brands including Garnier and Borghese to produce micellar water in great masses.

It is particularly beneficial for those with sensitive skin types because it is gentle and hydrating. Numerous face washes can induce dryness and leave harsh chemicals on the skin; however, micellar water does not contain alcohol and thus does not cause stinging. So, micellar water is applicable to most skin types including dry, sensitive, oily, or normal. Particularly, glycerin, which is a main compound used in micellar water, helps to reduce inflammation and irritation of the skin.

Micellar water is often cosmetically compared to a toner. A face toner is often used after a face wash and before the usage of a face moisturizer. The utilization of a face toner is to rid the skin of impurities such as dirt or leftover makeup. Today, toners are less concentrated on cleansing but rather have a specific emphasis on skin hydration. The distinction between a face toner and micellar water is that a face toner does not have micelles but rather hydroxy acids for an anti-aging effect. Thus, a toner can still be used even if micellar water is the form of facial cleansing.

Micellar water can be used on skin affected by acne and help show beneficial results. Acne is caused by the inflammation induced by clogged pores. Micellar water helps to remove dirt and oil on the skin which aids in preventing pore blockage. Furthermore, it lessens the necessity for the usage of washcloths and facial brushes which can spread bacteria. Micellar water can be used as a mild face wash, which through several studies, has been proven to improve acne.

Micellar water is a skin care product that is helpful in cleaning and toning the skin. It is applicable to all skin types and essentially helps to uphold skin hydration. Though it is a worthwhile addition to your skincare routine, it is important to talk with a trusted healthcare professional if you have any skincare concerns.
