The skincare market is vast, with over a 13% increase in sales last year in the United States alone. Options are endless, with various tools, creams, and treatments available; however, it can be hard to know what to buy. Hearing others’ skincare routines and advice can provide some great inspiration for the development of a skincare routine in such a saturated market.
We had the privilege of partnering with Hailey Rudman, the founder of LoveToTalkSkin, to bring you all some skincare routine ideas from Hailey and DermaTeens founder Ellis Schroeder.
Ellis sticks with the basics: cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen. Occasionally he may use exfoliation, but he has pretty sensitive skin that benefits greatly from a hydration-heavy skincare routine. Here’s what his routine looks like:
“I actually don’t do much with my skin,” Ellis says. “My philosophy around skincare is that less is more. At this age, I prioritize sun protection over anything else.” He’s not lying when he says less is more. According to New York City-based dermatologist Dr. Cybele Fishman, “I think people do too much to their skin and often end up harming it with all the extra steps. One of my mantras is, ‘Don’t overwash your skin, don’t overtone, and don’t over-exfoliate.”
In the morning, Ellis skips cleanser and goes straight in with the Innisfree SPF 36 Sunscreen or the Biore UV Tone Up Tinted Sunscreen SPF 50 PA++++. “I find these sunscreens to be very moisturizing, and they do not leave me with a greasy look, which I greatly appreciate!” he says. Both sunscreens he recommends are under $15, perfect for his teenager budget.
Ellis keeps up his ‘skinimalism’ at night. At night he typically washes his face in the shower with the La Roche Posay Toleriane Hydrating Gentle Face Cleanser. “When my skin needs it, I’ll go in with the Krave Beauty Kale-Lalu-Yaha, an AHA toner, to exfoliate my skin.” Ellis is a big fan of locking in moisture, so on damp skin, he applies his moisturizer. “I use the Vanicream Moisturizing Lotion, and it always soothes my skin.” Ellis loves this routine because it is simple and hydrating.
Like Ellis, Hailey believes that simple is sometimes better. Additionally, she wants you to know that the key to good skin is understanding what products are good for YOUR skin and that it does not have to be expensive. Hailey says, “No one needs to invest in a $300 moisturizer to reach clean and clear skin.”
Both Hailey’s morning and nighttime routines consist of solely three products. Hailey states, “As someone with oily skin, I tend to be very picky with the products that I put on my face.” Hailey starts the day with skincare. She begins by washing her face with the Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser. Next, she uses the CeraVe Moisturizing Cream. Finally, she finishes up with one of her favorite products of all time: the Elta MD SPF 40 Sunscreen. “This sunscreen does not leave a white cast or greasy feel, which is excellent!”
Hailey keeps the same routine again for nighttime, minus the sunscreen, with the addition of a prescription vitamin A derivative. “Before going to bed…I make sure I end with prescription tretinoin 0.025% topical cream.” She uses tretinoin for the right reasons. Dermatologist Dr. Tina Alster says, "While tretinoin was originally used for acne, investigators noticed a secondary benefit: smoother, lineless skin. Further research showed that vitamin A and its derivatives have the potential to stimulate collagen." Hailey recommends speaking with a dermatologist if you are interested in tretinoin.
