How Humidity Affects Your Scalp

Written by: Jasmine Biju

The drastic change in weather could be the reason behind a suddenly flaky scalp. The transition into the warmer and more humid months of the year could aggravate the buildup of oil and sweat on the scalp. With the increase in heat, there is an influx of itching, allergy, acne, and dandruff symptoms.

The skin has many functions, one of which is to regulate the body temperature. With a sudden rise in temperature, the body works harder to cool down causing an oily and sticky scalp in the process. The effect? Greasy hair, which if shampooed too often can exacerbate oil production and thus result in dryness.

Although the presence of dandruff is often associated with poor hygiene, this is simply a misconception. The direct cause is unestablished; however, it often can be related to yeast. The increase in sweat helps Malassezia yeast thrive on the scalp: the result is the formation of sticky patches, itchiness, and flakes.

While the change in weather can be a hindrance to scalp health, there are ways to care for your scalp. Choosing the right shampoo will help to reduce oil buildup and cope with potential frizziness. Unlike regular shampoos, clarifying shampoos offer a deep cleanse by cutting through oil and residue on your scalp and hair. Furthermore, using minimal hair products and limiting the use of hair gel can help with scalp care. If the condition of your scalp does not improve, it is important to consult a doctor to navigate potential treatment options.
